From Trombone Shorty in 2008 to the Soul Rebels in 2010 to the New Orleans Suspects in 2015, Louisiana musicians have added a lot of much-needed spice to Riverbend lineups in the last few years.

Tonight, Stooges Brass Band will see if it can preserve the Big Easy’s sterling record at the festival with a show that promises to feel like a parade through the French Quarter.

Formed in 1996, the seven-piece ensemble manages to sound in touch with New Orleans’ syncopated, jazzy roots while incorporating tight beats and vocal call-and-response flow that echo more recent trends in hip-hop.

Throughout their 20-year career, the members of the Stooges have taken the stage alongside artists like Black Star and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals at high-profile events around the country, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Bonnaroo and South by Southwest.

In 2010, they won Red Bull’s Street Kings competition showcasing the newest generation of Crescent City brass bands. The next year, they were named Best Contemporary Brass Band at the Big Easy Music Awards, an honor akin to Jimmy Buffett electing you as the mayor of Margaritaville.

“OK, so they’re pedigreed,” you’re probably thinking. “So what? Plenty of bands that play Riverbend have played elsewhere and with other big names. Why should I care?”

Because there’s something that’s just so … right about the combination of golden-hued, summertime swelter and the sound of a New Orleans jazz band in full, funky swing. It just fits. If it didn’t, we’d long since have seen the end of New Orleans bands making the 500-mile parade to events like Riverbend and the Nightfall concert series.
